How do you move past your feelings for someone if you are depressed over break up? Well, first and foremost I am not a doctor, however, it is natural to feel these signs of depression when you lose someone you care about. You shouldn’t feel as if there is something wrong with you if you have these feelings. Below I lay out steps to cope with these feelings and turn things positive even if you’re currently depressed over break up.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #1 – DON’T STEW!!!! If you stay in your home and dwell on the things that caused your break up or beat yourself up over mistakes you have made, you will undoubtedly extend your depressed state. You most certainly have hobbies, or at the very least, you have interest in doing something specific, so you should pre-occupy yourself with these interests and become more involved in yourself at the moment.

If you are having a hard time thinking of things to do to get your mind off your break-up, think back to how you lived prior to this relationship. Think about your preferences and the things that motivated you. Expound on them. They will definitely make you feel a great deal better.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #2 – Setup a night out with your friends and/or family. Many times when people are depressed over break up, they will avoid their friends and family because they are embarrassed or ashamed. DON’T FEEL THAT WAY!!!! Your friends and family are your support group during these times, just as you would be there in the event the same situation happened to them.

I can guarantee that this support group will give you the pick up you need. You can let go and smile and laugh at memories that you have all shared and look forward to more of the same. Cherish the things that you have rather that dwell on the things that you don’t.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #3 – Do something new. Something you have never done before but always wanted to. Maybe go sky diving or go climb a mountain or go on a really long bike or hiking trail. Be active. Get into the gym or go to a dance class. Do things that are going to rebuild your self confidence.

These things may sound intimidating, and rightly so. But you can do it. And once you have, the feeling of accomplishment will beat out that feeling of depression and you will be that much closer to being free of your break up.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #4 – Avoid contact with your ex. Many people make this mistake. They continuously try to contact their ex and it only keeps the break up fresh in their mind. It is not giving you the time to heal. You have to let go and force yourself to break off contact with that person.

At some point, once you have dealt with your emotions, you may be able to contact that person and meet just to straighten things out that may have been misunderstood, but now is not the time. You must give the other person space and give yourself the necessary time to get you in check. We are not ourselves when our logic is clouded by emotion.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #5 – If possible, get a pet. This is a very therapeutic way to deal with your temporary depressed state. Having something to care for and love that can show you affection back is a necessary part of human existence. Fact. If you are able, go to the local pet store and get a dog or a cat or you could even go to the local animal shelter and adopt.

Depressed Over Break Up Prevention Step #6 – Better yourself in some way. If you’ve been thinking about maybe taking classes to further your education, or maybe just a class that is of particular interest to you, now is the time to do these things. Not only does it give you something to take your mind off your break up, but it will also build your self esteem and give you that sense of accomplishment. This will also allow you to mingle with different people and possibly make new friends. Which is another great way to get your mind off of your recent break up.

There are many ways to avoid being depressed over break up, but these should definitely get you started. They are all based on getting your mind engaged in positive things as opposed to focusing on negative things. Sadly, it is human nature to focus on the negative, but you have the power to prevent that. So do it.

Now get out there and do something for yourself. Go have a great time with your friends and start that new class and take your new dog to the dog park and mingle with new people and learn to play that instrument that you’ve always wanted to learn to play. Jump out of a plane (with a parachute), climb that mountain, take that challenge, do it ALL!!! The sky is the limit my friend. If you do these things, that depressed over break up feeling will fade and fade fast.
